Rethinking Valentines

When it came to Valentine's Day I gave it my all.  The cute valentine's, little gifts for the children, Valentine's outfits etc.  What does my 5 year old say at 5:00 PM as we are delivering homemade treats to friends?  In a whiny voice-"I just want to play."

Angrily I felt like going down the list of all the hours I had put into this holiday for him, then I realized that was my problem not his and his request really wasn't out of line.

Thankfully the next friend we dropped treats off to was wonderfully outside with her kids as we pulled up. We shared some treats and she graciously shared her kids with mine so they could play.  Sometimes they are so easy to make happy.  Note to self-enjoy this before they hit the teenage years.

They sure know how to realign your thinking  and remind you what is important.  I'll try not to forget next year to not just try to make it look beautiful(which is my fun) but to make it more of their fun.  The evolution of my journey in motherhood.  I sincerely have so much to learn.....

My valentine's heart breakfast for dinner date

Dane's dinosaur valentines.  It is everything dinosaurs
in Dane's world right now.

Neve's valentines. It is currently everything pink in Neve's world.

My Mom usually had a little treat for us on Valentine's morning.
Constantly trying to be the mother she was.

The 200 cake truffles I made.  I do my Christmas neighbor treats at Valentines trying  to decrease the stress around Christmas.
I am realizing I am just delaying the stress to February.
My second attempt at cake truffles and I am still learning
all the tricks of the trade. Including I should have never started this baking insanity because now I am hooked.

My goal for next year, start earlier so that I can enjoy the day with Dane and Neve (and Ben if busy season permits), focus on making it fun for them and maybe reconsider making cake truffles.  I guess we'll see if I am as stupid next year as I was this year.

YUM! Those cake truffles look amazing!! How cute are you with your amazing decorations and teacher/neighbor gifts!? My poor kids got to share a movie as their Valentine (and only because I stumbled across it in the bottom of my closet - it was supposed to be for Christmas and was left behind, oops!) You inspire me!!!!

Brynn, I could learn a few things from you...and do! I'm usually on the other end of the spectrum. I do too little. I realized this year that I really need to do more and plan ahead. I already have some "plans" written in my planner for next year. Tells you how little was done this year if I felt the need to already begin planning for next year!

You are such a wonderful Mom but you are too hard on yourself...

First- have I shared with you my love for Joshua Radin? Discovered him a couple years ago. It was "love at first listen".

Also, I think I forgot to share with you (my bad) how extraordinarily delicious those cake truffles were. No, seriously. I begrudgingly saved TWO for Drew out of that whole plate. He said, "Brynn MADE these? They're amazing!"

Third, I love that you make a fabulous effort at Valentine's. It's the one bright spot in the doldrums of Winter after Christmas. Keep it up Super Woman.
